Jet Orientation Course

About the Course

The right transition. The first safe step into the world of jets.

The Jet Orientation Course (JOC) is a key stage in preparing a pilot who wishes to enter commercial aviation. It is at this point that the bridge is built between traditional training and the high-performance operating environment of a commercial jet.

At the Type Rating Center (TRC), JOC is more than just an adaptation course; it gives pilots the confidence they need to enter the cockpit of an A320 and not freeze up, i.e., avoid the “startle effect.”
The JOC at TRC is run by active TRIs with extensive experience on the A320.

Frequently Asked Questions

The JOC is the solid foundation that transforms a qualified pilot into a candidate ready for the next level — technically, emotionally, and mentally.

  • Develop operational fluency in a jet environment (high speed, high workload)
  • Acquire workload management, anticipation, and situational awareness skills
  • Learn the fundamentals of jet handling, energy management
  • Drastically reduce the “startle effect” — the surprise response and common freeze reaction when entering a jet cockpit for the first time
  • Avoid blocks during assessment flights, simulator sessions, or at the beginning of the Type Rating
  • Gain clear notions about handling commercial jets, becoming familiar with the Airbus cockpit environment, instruments, and logic
  • Introduction to Airbus flight control laws, flight envelope protections, and fly-by-wire philosophy
  • Theoretical sessions focused on:
    • Operating philosophy
    • Basics of the Airbus A320 cockpit
    • Introduction to flight control laws, automation, and fly-by-wire philosophy

  • Generic SOPs and airline mindset
  • 8 hours of simulation in FNPT II or FTD A320, including:
    • Manual flying and automation
    • Energy management
    • Operations in an IFR environment
    • Normal situations and introduction to failures

  • Development of CRM, communication, and teamwork skills in a multicrew cockpit environment
  • Instruction with continuous feedback, individualized support, and structured debriefings
  • Instructors with real line experience, active TRIs and TREs on the A320
  • Newly licensed pilots (CPL/ATPL frozen) who are about to begin their Type Rating
  • Students who wish to reduce the emotional impact of their first contact with the jet environment
  • Candidates preparing for screenings and assessment flights
  • Those who want to understand the operational and technical philosophy of Airbus in advance

TRC’s Jet Orientation Course is much more than an introduction to jets; it is the first training that prepares you for the airline environment: confidence in the cockpit, technical mastery, and a professional attitude from day one.

  • Course with airline atmosphere, pace, and mindset
  • Airbus A320 simulators
  • Highly experienced instructors, active TRIs/TREs
  • Training designed to reduce stress, build confidence, and improve performance from the very first flight
